In this field of research our work deals with aspects of nonverbal communication, with a main emphasis on the production of hand gestures. The project Cognitive and neural bases of gesture and prosody in discourse is concerned with the development of gesture and speech production in children and the impact of brain damage on gesturing in adults.
In the developmental part of this project we investigate the interplay of gesture and prosody in 5- and 9-year old, normal-developing children. In our clinical project we investigate the impact of language and communication impairments as well as of action planning deficits on gesturing in persons suffering from right and left hemisphere damage.
Our work in this field of research is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) (GO 968/3-3), Reha-Hilfe Verein e.V. as well as the PhD program Empirical Speech and Language Processing (ESP), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität.
